" S E N S E I "

“Sensei,” is the Japanese term for “teacher.” Of lower ranked elders/teachers is what is called a “sempai.” In Shotokan karate, one is admitted to being called a sempai once he or she reaches their full Shodan, or black belt. Later however, if a sempai trains for and passes their yondon (4th degree black belt) test, they become “sensei.”

When speaking to a sensei or sempai, it is sometimes necessary to tie in their first and/or last name as an extra sign of respect and personalization. The pure fact of being referred to as a sensei or sempai is an honor in itself, however, when someone lengthens the title by mentioning your actual name it emphasizes their appreciation and knowledge of what you had to go through to earn that title—it is a great sign of respect.
