C O N F I D E N C E

Shotokan karate is not a common sport. Soccer, baseball, football, basketball and even tae kwan do are all very common sports.

Getting to virtually the highest level in karate (the black belt) has given me a lot of confidence throughout my life. Not that I broadcast my abilities to the world, but when conversation about karate arise and I tell people that I am a black belt in karate, I usually get responses like, “Are you serious?” and “No way.” Perhaps it’s because I am physically little and they wouldn’t expect that from someone like me, but regardless of the reason it seems as though I gain at least a little respect from whoever I’m talking to. Shotokan karate is not exactly a common sport that a lot of kids participate in, so it’s somewhat of a confidence builder to say that I am good at a sport that not very many people do.  It is because of karate that I am not afraid of anyone. I’m not saying I don’t get scared or threatened every once in a while, but it’s nice to have the confidence of knowing I can protect myself if I need to.
