Have you ever heard the saying, “Perfect practice makes perfect?” Well, not to put a damper on things but that saying is 100% phony! According to my karate instructor, Sensei Andre Dulce, the real saying instead is, “PERFECT practice makes perfect.” In other words, practice is just as important as a test. If you’re playing soccer and practicing with only 50% of your ability, chances are that you will perform the same way in a game.

In karate, it’s easily assumed that getting your black belt is not an easy thing to do. However, I would not have been able to do that had it not been for that simple saying: “PERFECT practice makes perfect.” This taught me to never be lazy. It’s motivated me to doing my best even when it “doesn’t matter.” Some might say that practice tests in school “don’t matter,” but if you don’t take advantage of that practice test, how is that going to affect the result of your actual test?
If I hadn’t tried my best in all the classes leading up to each color belt test, it would have taken me a lot longer to get my black belt because I wouldn’t have acquired the skill and ability as fast due to the fact that I wasn’t reaching my full potential. So, I’ve learned to do my best at everything, even if no one is watching or if it “doesn’t count.”
