SOS: Stressed Out Students |
It’s All About Balance
Relax! There’s a way to combat the stress, and it’s called “balance.” Recognizing that students are being completely overwhelmed with school, the Palo Alto Medical Foundation proposes these steps for achieving a balanced, healthy lifestyle: Set Priorities
Do Not Be an Overachiever Set Realistic Goals Acknowledge Your Feelings Take Care of Yourself Schedule Time for You ![]() Set Priorities
Make a list of the most important or most time-sensitive assignments or obligations. Do those first, and tackle others later, focusing on only a few things per night. Do Not Be an Overachiever It’s great to participate in extracurricular activities, but limit yourself to only a few that are most interesting to you. It’s important to do these things because you enjoy them, not because they will look good on a college application or resume. Plus, involvement in these doesn’t mean you have to be captain of each team or president of each club; simply being a participant is enough! Set Realistic Goals Goals are an excellent motivation strategy, but setting goals that are too lofty can easily stress you out. Instead, set goals that challenge you but can be achieved in a short period of time such as a week or two. Once you attain them, you’ll feel a rush of accomplishment! Acknowledge Your Feelings Be honest with yourself. If one of your commitments is draining you more than it is filling you up with good feelings, maybe it’s time to reevaluate and ask yourself if it is something you wish to continue doing. Maybe you need a break, and that’s okay too. Take Care of Yourself Don’t lose your healthy habits! Always make sure you eat well, exercise, and get enough sleep. Schedule Time for You Taking 30 minutes per day to relax and do something that makes you feel good is a great way to ease stress. Once that time is up you’ll be ready to focus and get back to work. |
