Birdhorse Wines (Winemaker)

Katie Rouse grew up in Rockbridge County, Virginia, a member of a winemaking family. However, it was her rampant enthusiasm for all rock-related things that led her to earn a B.A. with a major Geology in 2010 at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington. A stint as a summer field ecology intern with the U.S. Geological Survey in western Wyoming was followed by a return to Whitman as a geology technician. She spent the summer of 2011 as a glacier trekking guide in Alaska before joining Rockbridge Vineyard in Raphine, VA, as a harvest intern.

Returning to the West Coast in late 2011, Katie worked as manager at Precita Park Cafe before gravitating back to the wine industry by joining Bouchaine Vineyards in the Napa Valley as a cellar intern for the Fall 2012 harvest. She moved on to Mahoney Vineyards, also in Napa, in early 2013 as a production assistant. Some two years later, she joined Gundlach Bundschu Winery in the Sonoma Valley as a wine educator. Then it was on to the University of California, Davis, in Fall 2016 for an M.S. in Viticulture & Enology, which she completed in 2018. She then took a harvest position as a cellar intern for the 2018 vintage at Mullineux Family Wines in Franschhoek, South Africa. In May 2018, she returned to the U.S. to co-found Birdhorse Wines with her partner, Corinne Rich. The two of them focus on crafting varietals such as Verdelho, Valdiguié, Carignan, and Arneis.

Katie was also a stagière du vin (wine intern) at Domaine Dubreuil-Fontaine in Burgundy, France, and is the assistant winemaker for Bedrock Wine Co in Sonoma.
