Smith & Hook Wine (Winemaker)

Megan McCollough, a native Californian, at age 15 watched as Hahn Family Wines was planting a vineyard near her hometown in Monterey County. This experience had little impact on her at the time, however—it’s the rare teenager who is impressed by grape vines—but it may have planted the seeds of what would eventually become Megan’s profession.

She completed a degree in wine and viticulture at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, and began her journey to becoming a winemaker by working in tasting rooms in the Central Coast, learning to explain wine to others, all the while honing her skills at crafting it. Following two harvests at a custom-crush facility, Megan joined Hahn Family Wines as an enologist in 2011. Promoted to assistant winemaker in 2015, she earned the title of winemaker in 2017, focusing on Cabernet Sauvignon and red blend under the Smith & Hook label. She is a self-proclaimed fan of Cabernet and spends her days checking the vineyards, monitoring fermentations, and continuously tasting throughout the process for consistency of flavors.

Megan fondly recalls a memory imparted to her by Nicky Hahn early in her career at the winery: “He said to me, ‘I hope you love what you do, because I love what I do.’” She concurs with this, saying, “It’s so true—if you can love what you do, you’re never going to work a day in your life.”
