Alice Sutro

SUTRO Wine Co. (Founder, Winemaker & Owner)

Alice Warnecke Sutro grew up on an apple farm in Boonville in the Anderson Valley of Mendocino County and also in France, going to public high school there. Enrolling at Stanford University in 2002, she earned a B.A. in Art History in 2006. She subsequently completed an M.F.A. in Painting and Drawing at the California College of the Arts in 2010.

After completing her master’s degree, Alice joined the family business, Warnecke Ranch & Vineyard, in 2010 as assistant vineyard manager. The ranch has been in the family for over 100 years and has had vineyards on the property since the 1970s. Alice had spent many summers on the ranch, and the desire to build a deeper connection to it was the inspiration for her return to it. Suffice it to say she’s a “farm girl” at heart.

She spent the next several years gaining an intimate knowledge of grape growing and the terroir of the ranch’s 80-acre vineyard. All the while, she was also involved in the Chalk Hill Artist Residency, a program that provides artists with housing, studio space, and access to the ranch property for up to six weeks.

As her knowledge of wine-grape growing deepened, Alice became curious about what a vineyard designate wine from Warnecke Ranch would be like. This led to the founding of SUTRO Wine Co. in 2012 and to her education to becoming a winemaker. She depended upon consultants, friends, labs, academic publications, and books to learn about the craft of winemaking and continues to do so; Lisa Bishop Forbes is currently her consulting winemaker.

The wines of SUTRO Wine Co. are characterized by their high acidity, complex profiles of aromas, minerality, and reds having strong but elegant tannins. In addition to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Sauvignon Blanc, Alice also produces a Rosé.

Along with making wine, Alice continues to pursue drawing and writing projects, thereby combining the art and science that are so important to winemaking. She is also a member of the Board of the Alexander Valley Grapegrowers Association. She and her family live on the ranch.
