Faith Armstrong-Foster
Onward Wines (Winemaker and Proprietor)
Faith Armstrong-Foster’s roots are from a large family that lived on a remote island off the coast of British Columbia. Her interest in wine was initially stimulated by the long evenings spent around the family table where ideas and projects were shared and the realization that it fostered an atmosphere of convivial communication among family and friends.
Her formal involvement with the wine industry began with her role as tasting room manager at Ironstone Vineyards in the Sierra Foothills. After working in marketing and promoting wine events in San Francisco for several years, she realized that she wanted to be involved in winemaking from the ground up. This led to her attending the University of California, Davis, where she earned a degree in Viticulture and Enology in 2006.
After graduation, she moved to Napa Valley and assumed a position as a laboratory technician with Frank Family Vineyards, soon becoming enologist and, in 2008, the assistant winemaker. In this role, she was involved in making Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Pinot Noir, Sangiovese, sparkling wine, and port.
In 2009, Faith introduced her own brand, Onward Wines, which features Pinot Noir exclusively. Not surprisingly, this is Faith’s favorite varietal to work with and enjoy. She is now focused on producing her own wines and serving as a consultant to Napa Station. She has added another brand, Farmstrong, to her portfolio; the brand comprises several different blends.
Faith has a strong commitment to the environment. In this context, she believes that sound and sustainable practices are not only critical for the survival of the wine industry but also are the basis for producing wine of the highest quality.
She and her husband Sean Foster, who is also a winemaker, live in Napa with their four children and pets, including hens. When winemaking tasks allow, she volunteers at her children’s school, gardens, and enjoys sharing meals with family and friends.
