Katie Rose Madigan

St. Francis Winery & Vineyards (Winemaker)

As do many winemakers, Katie Madigan finds that winemaking combines both creativity and science. She graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara, with a major in chemistry and became a harvest intern at St. Francis Winery & Vineyards in 2002. Although the hours were long, she experienced a full range of activities, including working in the lab and visiting the vineyards. at the end of four months Katie had found her calling. Two years later, she was a full-time laboratory technician at the winery and had begun studies in Enology & Viticulture at the University of California, Davis.

She continued her rapid rise through the winemaking ranks at St. Francis by being promoted to assistant winemaker in 2004. In this role, she concentrated on production of Chardonnay and championed the night picking of the Chardonnay fruit to preserve its delicate qualities. This promotion was followed in 2010 by her being named associate winemaker and then in 2012 as winemaker for Sonoma County. More recently, she was named as one of two “Best Women Winemakers” at the 2015 International Women’s Wine Competition.

She oversees production of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and “Old Vines” Zinfandel at St. Francis. All of the fruit for these varietals is produced in Sonoma County.

Katie’s goal is to create wines that are balanced, enjoyable, and memorable. The latter characteristic is reflected in the fact that she still has the magnum of St. Francis Cabernet Sauvignon, now empty of course, that was a gift from her parents when she turned 21.<
