Nancy Walker

Stephen & Walker Winery (Winemaker & Co-Owner)

The small family winery that Nancy Walker owns with her husband, Tony Stephen, is located in Sonoma County. They have spent most of their lives in the vineyards and wineries of California, so it was a natural progression to start their own winery in 2004. Stephen & Walker produces Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Sauvignon Blanc, among other varietals and blends.

Nancy has worked as a winemaker in California for more than 20 years. After receiving a degree in bacteriology in 1984 from the University of California, Davis, her winemaking career began that year as a cellar worker at McDowell Valley Vineyards. From there, she honed her skills at many local wineries starting with Geyser Peak (1984–1985) as wine chemist and quality control technician. After that, she moved to Dunnewood (1985–1990), where she was the assistant winemaker for five years before being named assistant winemaker at Clos du Bois (1991). She later assumed responsibility for the set up and operation of the small family winery at Brutocao Cellars (1991–1998).

Nancy’s search for diverse production and vineyard opportunities led her to accept a position at Fetzer Vineyards in Hopland (1998–2005). From 2005–2008, she worked for the Winery Exchange, an international beverage company, where she was responsible for the winemaking portfolio of Washington, Oregon, and California.

Currently, in addition to her responsibilities at Stephen & Walker, Nancy is Executive Winemaker for Vintage Wine Estates, including its Canopy Brands and Windsor Vineyards wines. She also has her own wine consulting business where she advises small producers of ultra-premium wines.

Nancy and Tony have two sons and live in Hopland in Mendocino County.
