Anne Vawter

Red Mare Wines (Winemaker & Owner)

Anne Vawter’s fascination with wine began in her teens in Walla Walla, Washington. As her father, Bruce McKendry, was discovering new wines in the then-new winegrowing area, he also discovered that Anne, his youngest daughter, was curious about wine. Later, combining her interest in winegrowing and her love of nature from growing up on a dairy farm, Anne set her sights on becoming a winemaker and viticulturist

In 2002, she graduated with a B.S. in Viticulture & Enology from the University of California, Davis, and then worked for wineries in Washington, Napa Valley, and Chile. She also spent four years with Paradigm Winery under the tutelage of Heidi Barrett. Anne says that when she was considering moving on from Paradigm Winery, she asked Heidi for her opinion about pursuing the consulting track and felt that Heidi was very encouraging and supportive.

Anne was formerly the winemaker for Oakville Ranch Vineyards, Varozza Vineyards, Ziata Wines, Hoopes Family Vineyard & Winery, and Teaderman Vineyards. In 2009, she partnered with two investors to create Red Mare Wines, her first label, which had its initial release in Fall 2010. Red Mare offers Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon as its varietals.

In addition to her consulting business and her own wine brand, Anne manages and lives at Blossom Creek Farm, a horse ranch in Calistoga, California, where her red mare, Paradigm, and her mustang, Johnny Cash, live with chickens, a cat and dog, and a bee hive.

She has two daughters with her husband Cameron, who also works in the wine industry. In her free time, Anne and Cameron enjoy rock climbing in the Sierras or sailing on San Francisco Bay.
