Nancy Steel

Stevenot Winery (Winemaker)

Nancy Steel has a lengthy record of producing innovative and award-winning wines. Born and raised in Fremont, California, she earned degree at the University of California, Davis, majoring in plant science with an emphasis in viticulture. Prior to graduating, she worked in a crush at Domaine Chandon in Yountville. Nancy then continued her practical training at Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars. Subsequently she worked in the Barossa Valley in Australia, at Lambert Bridge Winery in Sonoma, and at Clos du Val Winery in Napa.

She has been a head winemaker for more than 20 years, first with noted Zinfandel producer Mazzocco Winery in the Dry Creek Valley of Sonoma and was the founding winemaker at Perry Creek Winery in El Dorado County in the Sierra Foothills. She remained there for 14 years and developed “Zin Man,” the winery’s signature wine. Nancy’s experience in three of California’s most prestigious growing regions, along with her international experience, allowed her to bring a diversified background to bear on the wines of Solomon Wine Company, now closed, and as a consultant to Young’s Vineyard in Plymouth, CA, and Mount Aukum Winery in El Dorado County. She currently is the winemaker at Stevenot Winery in Calaveras County.

Nancy’s approach to winemaking is captured in the following quote: “What I enjoy so much is the combination of art and science that are involved. The chemistry of the conversion of sugar to alcohol and all the subsequent chemical reactions fascinate me. Then there is the blending and working with the different vintages and vineyards. Every vineyard and every vintage is unique. It is truly amazing.”
