Stefania Wine (Winemaker & Owner)

Stefania Romero and her husband Paul began their winemaking journey when both of them were laid off during the Silicon Valley dot.com bust. Paul’s mother offered good advice and suggested that they use the time to do something they really wanted to do. Stefania contacted the University of California, Davis, Paul ordered 50 Syrah and Grenache plants from a nursery, and they began learning how to grow grapes and make wine.

They tended their first plants in their San José, California, backyard while at the same time watching videos from a distance-learning program. They moved from tending those 50 plants to tending acres of plants faster than they could have dreamed, and by 2005 they switched from home winemaking to commercial winemaking.

From 2007 to 2015, they were part of the Chaine d’Or production team and took over all of the management and operations for the wines produced there, in addition to producing wines under their own label, Stefania. The Romeros moved to Gilroy in late 2015 and are now focused on crafting their own wines. They produce Cabernet Sauvignon among other varietals.
