Hawk and Horse Vineyards (Executive Winemaker)

Tracey Hawkins is the Executive Winemaker and Managing Partner of Hawk and Horse Vineyards, located in the Red Hills AVA of Lake County, CA. She and her husband, Mitch, take great pride in their farming practices, which incorporate both organic and biodynamic methods. Their wines are handcrafted in very small lots from their estate mountain vineyard. With soil and climate well suited to growing Bordeaux varieties, they specialize in Cabernet Sauvignon and "Latigo," a Cabernet-based Port-style wine that Tracey designed in the style of the great wines of Portugal.

Tracey grew up in Sonoma County, where from a young age she helped in the family's restaurant business. Growing up in the heart of California's wine country, wine was a natural part of life. Her family purchased the 1,300-acre Lower Lake property, now home to Hawk and Horse Vineyards, in 1989. Tracey immediately resonated with the land and its rugged beauty.

After visiting the property often, she and Mitch took over running the ranch and developing Hawk and Horse Vineyards in 1999. With a desire to create wines of distinction and a strong devotion to maintaining the land in a pristine natural state, Tracey spearheaded the vineyard project, with biodynamic and organic farming central to the vision. She has a hand in all aspects of wine production, from farming and harvest decisions to winemaking and cooperage.

Hawk and Horse Vineyards, under Tracey's direction and management, has been Demeter certified since 2008 and CCOF organic certified since 2004. Testimony to the value of biodynamic and organic farming is the consistent high quality of the wines and the numerous accolades awarded to Hawk and Horse Vineyards. Most recently, it was named the California Lake County Winery of the Year for 2018 in the New York International Wine Competition.

Before starting the vineyard, Tracey worked in the wine industry in sales and marketing. She holds a degree in English/Creative Writing, summa cum laude, from San Francisco State University. She has also studied winemaking through the University of California, Davis, and wine marketing at Sonoma State University. Tracey has had the privilege to work with and be mentored by some of the finest winemakers in the industry.

In her spare time, Tracey enjoys spending time with her children, cooking and writing poetry. She also competes in amateur rodeo and gymkhana events. Mitch and Tracey are raising their three children with an intimate relationship to the land and the business they so love.
