Little Brother in Brave New World: A Remix |
Why This Remix? |
My remix of Cory Doctorow’s Little Brother combines scenes from the original work with ideas and characters from the dystopian universe from Aldous Huxley’s novel Brave New World. The purpose of this writing is to remind us of the themes we’ve discussed in class about the power of the internet and the collective digital world, namely who has control and what we can do to use technology as a means of igniting social movements and giving voices to the voiceless. This remixed work begins with two of Little Brother’s characters, Darryl and Marcus, as they are taken captive aboard a ship to a detention center on Treasure Island. From there, the reader can choose to follow either Darryl or Marcus along their respective journeys into a world where each person is stripped of their individuality, independence, and ultimately all control of their lives. In one story, one of the boys becomes sucked into this new world and surrenders these privileges for the promise of always being taken care of. In the other story, the other boy realizes that the technology is not evil, but rather it is an incredible vehicle for unlimited possibilities, and if used appropriately, it can bring positivity and community to society. What would happen if we let our government strip away the internet and our individual internet presence? What would happen if we too surrendered all control? |
