Literary
Forms in the Bible
- Human speech and writing often take on a formulaic character
to suit the situation in which they are spoken or read. These
formulas are apparent in the Bible in passages that share the
same elements, even if their specific content differs.
Scholars have tried to isolate these forms to gain an appreciation
of the original contexts in which they might have been used (the
Sitz im Leben, or "setting in life"), and to
discern the compositional strata of the text.
