The 20th Century Minstrel Show

This innovative television series holds all of the categories of the minstrel shows back in the 1880s. In April of 1990 when the first show aired, millions of television sets all over the United States tuned in to watch comedy, music, dance, and acting all in one show, much like that of the minstrels.

Created by Actor, Director, Writer, and Producer Keenan Ivory Wayans, the show featured satirical and often controversial comedy that touched on many racial, social, civil, and political issues seldom discussed by the media. Many stereotypes, of not only African American but many other minorities and subcultures, were brought to public attention at a time where these issues were so hidden. The show featured many amazing comics such as Jamie Foxx, Damon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, David Alan Grier, Jim Carrey, and Tommy Davidson. The show also offered music, with guest recording artists performing on every show, as well as dance, with the sexy squad of female dancers known as "The Fly Girls." Wayans' vision was to bring "color" to the the sketch comedy line up while using a touch of old tradition.
