The Old Spark Still Burning
The Minstrel Era, which occurred in the 1800s, took the entertainment circuit by storm. Beginning with white performers blackening their faces to humorously portray African Americans, it soon evolved into some of the only ways black performers could find professional stage work and opportunities. Although it was a big hit in the North, bringing comedy, musical talents, dance, acting, and singing together in one production, these Minstrel shows brought to light many negative black stereotypes that still linger in society today. This site gives examples of how this Minstrel Era has negatively and positively affected the world we live in today. ENJOY!!!
