1975 – “The fall of Saigon” ended the Vietnam War and the first wave of Vietnamese immigrants came to the United States.
1977 – A second wave of Vietnamese refugees started coming to the United States. Approximately two million Vietnamese came over on tiny, overcrowded boats.
1980 – The Refugee Act was passed which decreased restrictions to make it easier for the Vietnamese to enter the United States. The government set up agencies that helped place Vietnamese families with American families who could help them get used to American culture.
1990s – By this time most Vietnamese had left the community in which they were placed and had moved to metropolitan areas where they started Vietnamese communities.
Today – Forty percent of Vietnamese Americans live in Orange County. Due to the fact that they were refugees, Vietnamese Americans have one of the highest naturalization rates of all immigrant groups. Because of the high rates of poverty that are still an issue in Vietnam today, it is expected that the high rate of Vietnamese immigration will continue.
