Vietnamese Refugees

Reasons for Migrating

  • After the Vietnam War, many Vietnamese who had worked with the United States feared that they would be punished by the new Communist government so they fled the country.
  • The second wave of migrants came to America fleeing from the Communist government’s policies about agriculture and the economy which included “reeducation” and torture of citizens who had once been loyal to the United States.

Where did they settle?

  • They were relocated to refugee centers in California, Arkansas, Florida and Pennsylvania. From there, families all over the nation took them in and tried to help them adjust to American society.
  • Most Vietnamese families ended up moving to metropolitan areas and forming Vietnamese communities there.
