Today economic and recreational harvesting of the spiny lobster is effecting the population and size of these lobsters.
The habitat of the lobsters is being desroyed so they have to find new places to live or die out. Large populations of lobsters live in the better quality habitats, but since they are being harvested there, they are forced to live in lower quality habitats and cannot survive as well.
Also, since fisheries only want larger lobsters, the size of the lobsters in the wild is decreasing. All the large lobsters are being harvested so they cannot pass their genes on to the next generation, therefore, the spiny lobsters are becoming smaller and smaller.
