Space:
Native American Examples

  • The early migrations of the Native Americans were based on natural paths and rhythms. They did not make their own paths, but instead followed natural paths and used existing spaces.

6.2.2 Compare and demonstrate the difference between imitating movement and creating original material.

  • The Pomos would migrate to the California coast every summer to hunt and gather in that area. During the winter they would return to inland areas. They used sunlight and temperature as cues for their migration.
  • 3.1.4 Expand the ability to incorporate spatial and time concepts in movement problems (e.g., select and combine three locomotor movements traveling in three different path-ways and using three different tempos).

  • Later in their history, the Native Americans of California were forcibly removed from their land and relocated to much smaller areas.
  • Teachers can explore how the compression of space makes people feel differently. When people are forced to give up space and compress, there is a sense of loss of freedom, actual loss of freedom, and a shift in attitude or mood to those around you.

4.1.3 Demonstrate increased range and use of space, time, and force/energy concepts (e.g., pulse/accents, melt/collapse, weak/strong).
