Monarch Butterfly

Current Status

In recent years, humans have been disturbing the overwintering sites and migration path of the monarch butterfly. There has been an increase in the logging of the forrests in Mexico where the butterflies would usually spend the winter.

The increased use of herbicides in North America has killed off many of the milkweed plants that butterflies need to breed and get nector from.

Also, the increased development (building houses and cities) along the California coast has decreased the amount of overwintering sites for monarchs.
