Leatherback Sea Turtle

Current Status

Humans are the main reason for the fact that the leatherback sea turtle population is getting smaller. They used to have a large population but now they are an endangered species.

Some people have hunted these sea turtles for their meat but it is more popular to take their eggs from their nest.

Fishermen have also caused the population to decrease because the turtles get caught in their nets and either drown or get injured.

Also, the turtles can get tangled in and caught on anchor lines, ropes, and cables in the ocean. These can cause the turtles to get injured and drown.

Lastly, leatherback sea turtles have often mistaken trash such as plastic bags and styrofoam as their natural food. Eating these things damages the turtles' digestive tract and they can die.
