Ladybird Beetle

Current Status

Today, ladybird beetles are used as a biological control for farmers. This means that insead of using chemicals to kill unwanted bugs from eating the plants (like aphids), the ladybird beetles are released onto the crops and they eat the bugs.

Since this method worked so well for farmers, they started to bring non-native ladybug beetles into different areas of the United States. Scientists observed that after these different types of ladybugs were brought to an area, the native ladybird beetles' population did no increase because they had to compete with the new ladybird beetles. This shows that introducing new ladybird beetles into an area is not as effective for biological control as leaving it to the native ladybird beetles.
