Tiger Salamander Migration Facts

Location/Distance

  • The tiger salamander migrates up to 2 miles from pond where they were born.
  • They roam throughout the habitat during their lives, especially when they are young.
   

Mating

  • Oviposition happens in several batches within one breeding season.
  • Up to 1300 eggs may be deposited in several batches.

  • Young: Algae, crustaceans, mosquito larvae
  • Adults: Insects and tadpoles

   

Migration Cues

  • Mediterranean climate's rainy season during December to January is a migration cue.
  • Lower average temperature is also a cue for the salamaners.
  • Vernal pool habitats in lowlands - pools must be dynamic and well-formed
