It is difficult to know the exact current status of the arctic tern because the population is spread over such a wide area.
There are many arctic terns in Greenland and Iceland, so it is helpful to monitor the changes in winter sea ice there and the decline in Antarctic krill (a main source of food for the terns) in that area.
