Santa Clara University
Science should be relatable, understandable, and available to everyone. Throughout my astronomical career I have organized and volunteered at outreach events for elementary schools and the general public. Below lists upcoming and past events I have done as a faculty member at SCU.
- September 27, 2019: Astronomy Observing Night
Our second annual astronomy observing event was a success! We had more telescopes out than before and were able to see planets, the moon, and some nebula. The free hot chocolate was also a hit :) Please click here to see some photos from the event. - August 18, 2018: Astronomy Observing Night
We had a great time at our first observing night! We set up three of SCUs telescopes plus we had two volunteers bring there own telescopes. We saw the craters on the moon, Saturn, Jupiter and its moons, Venus and Mars. There were approximately 100 people who attended! Please click here to see some photos from the event. - August 21, 2017: Solar Eclipse Viewing Party
Even though we were not in the path of totality that did not stop us from having a good time! We had several solar telescopes up for viewing and I gave a short talk on what is a solar eclipse. I also did a live facebook talk to promote the event. Click here to view the facebook talk and here to see some photos from the event.
UCLA: Astronomy Live!
While I was a graduate student at UCLA I founded, along with fellow graduate student Greg Mace, the UCLA astronomy outreach program called Astronomy Live!. This program is dedicated to bringing astronomy to children in elementary school. We believed that if exposed to the wonders of the world around them in a fun and interactive way, these childrens may be more likely to want to pursue a STEM-related career. Or at the very least appreciate the value of science in their every day lives. Please click here to learn more about Astronomy Live!.
Astronomy Live!'s first major event that Greg and I lead was called Exploring Your Universe. It is a campus-wide STEM event free to the public. During 2009, the year of its inception, we had approximately 600 people attend. It has grown every year and now has an attedance upwards of 7000 people that come from all across the greater Los Angeles area. Please visit here to learn more about Exploring Your Universe.
