What People Are Saying About Barred from Life
"Congratulations
for the poignant and engaging Barred from Life. It was a masterful blend
of dance, video, music, staging and lighting. The dance captured with
great intensity the inner tensions of the different stages of the process.
The audience was engaged and provoked to respond at many different levels.
This was an important undertaking, not only for you as a professional
dancer, but for the Santa Clara Community as well. You enabled us to connect
with a world we knew little about but wanted to understand. It was a very
effective and dramatic piece of dance theatre. Congratulations again on
a superb job." Janet Flammang, Acting Dean, College of Arts
and Sciences, Santa Clara University
". . . tremendously compelling. I left the theater and went home
to research many of the exonerees on-line for 2.5 hours. I became very
thoughtful about a situation I was not really familiar with and that is
because of what you put out there. Thank you!" Letel Barber
". . . a wonderful production. It was artistic in every sense
and most compelling. The choreography was so beautifully structured and
was well-complemented by the energy of the musical score and the film.
The dancing was intensely emotional yet controlled superbly."
Pam Quist, faculty, Santa Clara University Music Dept.
". . . the performance was such a gift to us . . so important
and meaningful. It was truly an enlightening experience."
Vinita Bali
I saw Barred from Life twice . . . the performance was incredible!
Law Professor Cynthia Mertens
" . . . Congratulations to you and your collaborators. It was
a deeply affecting performance. David, your dancing caught the mood perfectly."
Denise Carmody, Provost, Santa Clara University
"Congratulations . . . a tremendous performance." Dean
Donald Polden, Santa Clara University, School of Law
"Fantastic does not describe the performance! I was blown away by
the research, stage, multi-media presentation, dramatic effects and powerful
dance. This combined with the conclusion was absolutely fantastic. . .
Outstanding . . . I am sure this will be going "on the road"
and will make a significant impact on a crucial problem in our criminal
justice system." Kip Rolle
" Thank you for bringing forth the issue of those who are and
have faced death row who are innocent. . . . After the performance, my
boyfriend and I had had a 2 hour discussion on just all the pressing issues
our society faces. I never knew the extent of this issue until now and
I thank you for being courageous enough to face all the adversities to
push this issue to the front line. I wish you the best of luck in taking
your performances around the state and hopefully even nationally! It was
an incredible interpretation and event." Louise Wu - student
"Thank you so much for creating the Barred From Life event. It
was a truly moving experince. Hearing about the innocent men's experiences
of being put in jail through the video and dance was saddening and maddening
at the same time. Then, actually talking with the exonerees inspiried
me to take action. If it is money we need in order to actually do blood
analysis on suspects of crime then I will help. If we need more racial
education among police and all those involved in the judicial system I
will help to support that in anyway possible. I pray that no more innocent
people will have to lose their lives to a faulty justice system ever again.
Beyond praying though, I will take action." Missy Scott-Florez
