Little Brother
by Cory Doctorow is a novel discussing surveillance, terrorism, race,
class and gender in a technologically advanced San Francisco. When a terrorist group bombs the Bay Bridge, the Department of Homeland Security invades San Francisco. In the name of the Patriot Act, the right to privacy was removed and many people, including teenagers were unlawfully imprisoned on Treasure Island. In order to extract information from the suspected terrorists, these citizens were tortured through food deprivation, stress positions, and waterboarding. When the main character and some of his friends were finally released from prison, they set out to retaliate against the unjust treatment of the Department of Homeland Security. Why did the Department of Homeland Security arrest and torture teenagers? Unfortunately, in many parts of the world, children are recruited by terrorist groups and are tasked with completing missions. It is unsettling to think of children being groomed by terrorists to be suicide bombers and fight in wars. Why are children terrorist group targets? They are impressionable and not likely to resist adults; especially because many children do not yet understand death and that their actions have consequences. Also many people who are looking for terrorists assume they are adults, not children. Children creating lack of suspicion in adults allow them to complete many more missions. In my remix of Little Brother, I am making one of the supporting characters, Vanessa Pak, the terrorist behind the Bay Bridge bombing. She was born into a family that hated America and made it their mission to destroy the country from the inside out. Even though she had been training for the day of the bombing since the day she was born, like all teenagers, her feelings become her greatest weakness. I chose to remix Little Brother in this way because I felt that the irony of teenagers actually being responsible for the crime and not just mistakenly imprisoned would be an interesting twist. Additionally, I wanted to implement that regardless of who we are and what we believe in, our emotions are our rulers. Chapter 1 -> |
