Joanne Wing

Stags' Leap Winery (Winemaker)

Joanne “Jo” Wing grew up on a farm and orchard in Cambridge, New Zealand, so naturally agriculture has always been part of her life. Her initial passion for winemaking was centered on Merlot and sparked her interest in learning how wine grapes are grown. This prompted Jo to pursue a degree in horticulture at Massey University in Wellington, intending to learn viticulture — the soil, climate, and vines that define the qualities in the fruit produced. She earned a Bachelor of Applied Science in 2004. Four years later, she entered Lincoln University near Christchurch to study Oenology and Viticulture, earning a graduate diploma in 2008.

Prior to enrolling at Lincoln, Jo worked harvests at Indevin in Marlborough, NZ, and Saintsbury in the Napa Valley in 2007. She also did a one-year stint at Hemingway Fine Wines in Christchurch while studying at Lincoln, after which she was a cellar hand at Mount Pleasant Wines in the Hunter Valley of Australia in January, 2009. Her stay in Australia was brief, however, because she returned to Indevin two months later as Harvest Assistant Winemaker.

Jo joined the Stags’ Leap Winery winemaking team in mid-2009 as Harvest Enologist, having fallen in love with Napa Valley during her internship at Saintsbury. She spent the next fall as a Harvest Cellar Assistant at Chateau Castan in the Bordeaux region before returning to Stags’ Leap. She was named Winemaker there in 2015 and now oversees the production of all red and white wines.

When not working in the winery, Jo loves to cook and is particularly fond of farm-fresh food.
