Simone Sequeira

La Follette Wines (Winemaker)

Simone Sequeira honed her winemaking skills, first by spending 2002 in Burgundy at Clos de Vougeot working with Pinot Noir, and then doing a harvest in the Mendoza growing area of Argentina in 2006. She continued her career in the wine industry in mid-2006 as Laboratory Manager for Taft Street Winery in Sebastopol, California. In January, 2008, she moved to Swirl Wine Brokers as Account Manager and then joined Tandem Wines/La Follette at its inception in 2010 as Assistant Winemaker. Simone became Associate Winemaker at La Follette Wines in 2014 and its winemaker in mid-2016.

In this role, she is producing site-driven, terroir-focused wines with fruit from singular vineyards. The philosophy underlying her wines is “that each individual vineyard site has a unique expression [terroir], that can be expressed through the wines made from grapes grown in that place. The winemaker’s role is to create a wine that is transparent to the site, pure in its expression and enjoyable to drink.” To accomplish this, Simone partners with family-owned and –farmed vineyards. After working with these growers for years, she has a depth of understanding of their sites that enables crafting of wines reflective of that place for that particular vintage.

In her own words, Simone says, “Winemaking is a carousel of vineyard visits, cellar decisions, tasting, traveling, spreadsheets and sharing the wines with others.” As part of the process, she opines that, “I feel like I’m receiving nonverbal messages and cues all day long from ambient aromas inside and outside of the winery.”

La Follette offers two varietals, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
