Amy Ludovissy

Viansa Sonoma (Winemaker)

Amy Ludovissy is a winemaker for Viansa Sonoma. She started out in the wine industry at a very young age, making wine with her parents in a basement in Iowa. As a young adult, she started her professional career teaching English at high schools in Taiwan and Korea. Upon returning to Iowa, where she began working as a substitute teacher, she continued to pursue an interest in winemaking by attending classes in enology at a local community college while teaching during the day. In 2009, Amy accepted a harvest position at Morton Estate, in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand, met her husband, also an aspiring winemaker from South Africa, and never looked back. and then took harvest positions in Calistoga and ‘down under’ in Australia. Ultimately, her harvest hopping found her at Girard Winery in the Napa Valley in 2011, where she started as a lab intern. She was subsequently promoted to enologist and to assistant winemaker in 2013.

Amy has since found her way to Sonoma, making award-winning California wines for Viansa Sonoma as its winemaker. Both Girard Winery and Viansa Sonoma are members of the Vintage Wine Estates family of wineries. At Viansa, she produces a number of varietals, including Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, red and white blends, and others, using fruit sourced from various vineyards throughout Sonoma County. Her enthusiasm for winemaking is best expressed in her own words: “For me, winemaking is about those amazing moments, when you go around and taste all the tanks, and you get to one and you’re like, wow, this is amazing. I can’t wait to share this one with friends around the dinner table.” And share she does, enjoying wine with friends and family and pairing it with the many foods that she loves.

Needless to say, given her globetrotting prior to working at Girard, Amy loves worldwide travel, saying that “All of my travel destinations are memorable for one reason or another."
