Faust (Winemaker & General Manager)

Jen Beloz earned a B.S. degree in biology from the University of San Francisco, where her physiology professor encouraged her to head for medical school. However, her goal was to become a winemaker, so her professor arranged for her to work in his friend’s small winery in Australia, apparently with the hope that the backbreaking work would prompt her “to head for the hills [and redirect her interest toward medical school]. In her own words, she says, “Well, it did. The hills just happen to be covered with vines.”

Returning to the U.S., she enrolled in the Food Science & Enology program at the University of California, Davis. Her first experience at a winery was a two-year stint at Cline Cellars, where she worked in the laboratory and the cellar. This was followed by a move to Ravenswood Winery in 2000, where she spent 11 years as the Director of Winemaking. There she benefitted from the mentorship of Joel Peterson and managed grower relations, scouted new vineyards, and crafted blends with particular focus on the single vineyard projects.

In August 2011, she became General Manager/Winemaker for The Prisoner Wine Company in Rutherford. She subsequently moved to Faust, a unit owned by Huneeus Vintners, in 2019 as its General Manager and Winemaker. There, she focuses on producing the Cabernet Sauvignons for which the winery is noted. In her own words, she says, “Winemaking offers a great balance of mental and physical challenges that keep me on my toes.”
