Alicia Ysais

DFV Wines (Senior Director of Winemaking)

Alicia Ysais was destined to be a winemaker from birth. Born in the small farming town of Hughson, CA, she was surrounded by vineyards and both of her parents were involved in viticulture. She earned a degree in biochemistry from California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo, and intended to pursue a career in the health industry. After a brief stint in a Ph.D. program at the University of Arizona, Alicia returned to California and then started her career in winemaking by accepting a position in 1995 as a laboratory technician with the Indelicato family’s winery in Manteca. She soon was assigned a special project involving monitoring of barrel fermentation, which led to her designing a quality control program for barrel fermentation for the winery’s inventory of over 5000 barrels.

Alicia’s status on the winemaking team rapidly grew, and she assumed increasing responsibility for the production of red, white, and rosé wines. In 2006, she was named to the position of Senior Winemaker for Delicato Family Vineyards (DFV).

In 2010, she met with Cheryl Indelicato to explore Cheryl’s long-held dream of developing her own wine brand, which she ultimately named HandCraft Artisan Collection. To implement this, Alicia immediately began to select vineyard lots from the Indelicato’s Monterey and Lodi properties that would reflect the style appropriate to Cheryl’s goal, namely wines that are fruit forward, distinct, and easy to drink.

When not working in the cellar, Alicia enjoys spending time with her daughter and Ferrous, her canine buddy. Her recreational interests include skiing, riding quads, reading, and gardening.
