Nova Cadamatre

Robert Mondavi Winery (Director of Winemaking)

Nova Caramadre is a native of Greer, South Carolina, but moved north to SUNY, Morrisville, for her higher education. She intended to pursue a degree in horticulture, but the writing of a research paper on diseases of grapevines led to a love of wines and vines. By 2003, Nova was working as an unpaid intern at several wineries in Pennsylvania, where she learned the basic techniques for producing cool climate varietals and the traditional methods for producing sparkling wines. The next year found her in the Finger Lakes region of New York, where she continued to polish her winemaking and viticultural skills. While in this region, Nova enrolled in the well-regarded viticulture and enology program at Cornell University, which eventually led to a senior internship with Constellation Wines U.S. and a degree in 2006; she was one of the first graduates of the program.

Nova’s relationship with Constellation continued with her move to California to work for the firm as the assistant winemaker for Mission Bell winery. A mere nine months later, she was promoted to winemaker and placed in charge of the sparkling wine unit. She subsequently became involved with the luxury red wine programs at Souverain, Chateau St Jean, and Beringer Knights Valley in 2009. Nova was a winemaker at Robert Mondavi Winery from 2013 to 2015, when she moved on to become Director of Winemaking at Canandaigua Winery in the Finger Lakes region; both are owned by Constellation. In July 2018, she returned to the Napa Valley as Constellation’s Senior Director of Winemaking, Napa. She was named Director of Winemaking, Robert Mondavi Winery, in August 2020.

Nova is a graduate of the WSET (Wine and Spirit Education Trust). Moreover, in 2017 she earned the Master of Wine degree, one of the most difficult and exclusive wine certifications in the world; she is the first woman winemaker in the U.S. to do so.

Nova and her husband Brian are the proud parents of Nathaniel, and have their own boutique label, Trestle Thirty One. When she is not at the winery, Nova blogs, writes about wine, and enjoys gardening, music, and cooking.
