Julie Holme

Holme Estate Cellars (Winemaker and Co-Owner)

Growing up in the Napa Valley, Julie always knew she wanted to get into winemaking. Summer jobs while in high school consisted of working bottling lines at Sutter Home, Buena Vista, and Opus One as well as tasting room work with Robert Mondavi and Sterling. These experiences only fueled Julie’s passion for winemaking even more, leading her to study Wine and Viticulture at California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo. She finished up her degree with an internship in New Zealand, where she first learned of cool-climate winemaking and her passion for travel began.

Julie recognized harvest time to be the most important time for winemaking and upon realizing that she could work two harvests in a year, she started out on what was to be a ten-year journey. Working consecutive harvests in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, Julie learned much about viticulture and winemaking and the different techniques that each culture used. She worked in New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, and Chile, and in California with Cakebread Cellars, Chimney Rock, Gloria Ferrer, Sonoma Cutrer, Justin Winery, Vina Robles and Ponte Winery to name a few.

In 2009, Julie decided to start her own wine label after seeing the quality of fruit her husband’s family vineyard in Australia was producing. She and her husband, Craig, made Shiraz that year and Holme Estate Cellars was born. Wanting to be based in California near Julie’s family, the couple decided to import the wine and sell it in the States. As always, she focused on quality and was excited to bring high-end wines from down under to America. In 2011 Holme Estate Cellars expanded to include a lineup of California wines, a reflection of the marriage in cultures Julie and her husband created. In 2017 Julie and her husband opened a tasting room in Oceanside, California for Holme Estate Cellars, selling directly to the Southern California wine lovers.

Julie currently lives in Napa and joined Farm Collective Winery in 2017 as their Associate Winemaker. Combining Old World tradition with New World techniques, Julie maintains her commitment to making world-class wines without compromise on quality.

Outside of applying her skills at the wineries, Julie is kept smiling by her young daughter and son. She can also be found pouring wine at her Holme Estate Cellars Tasting Room in Oceanside, California in her spare time or Wine Judging for the California State Fair.
