Laura Werter

Toasted Toad Cellars (Winemaker and Partner)

Laura Werter's passion for wine and food began at an early age. Homemade pastas and bread and tarts, among other delicious dishes, were common in her home, and for as long as she can recall, her parents loved wine. She accompanied her family on trips to Napa and Sonoma where she collected grape-shaped soaps, tasted food samples, and smelled the wines that her parents tasted

By the time she was seven years old, her father had decided to try producing homemade wine. She helped him pick grapes in Napa, and when they brought the grapes home, they put them in primary fermentation containers, aka Rubbermaid trash cans. To this day, one of her favorite smells is that of fermenting grapes.

She continued to make wine with her family and family friends until she graduated from high school and went to college. However, the quarter system at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, greatly interfered with harvest, and she was not able to help with much of the home winemaking while in school.

She began college life as a business administration major, with a concentration in marketing and a minor in economics. During her junior year, she studied abroad in Australia where one of the first places she visited was a winery. As she walked through the cellar, looking at the tanks and the barrels, and smelling the wonderful aromas that she missed so much, Laura realized that winemaking was what she wanted to do. When she returned to the U.S., she decided to minor in Wine and Viticulture so that she could get a job in the wine industry.

The weekend after Laura turned 21 and had returned from celebrating in Las Vegas with her father, she started her career in the winemaking business. She began working in a tasting room, sharing her knowledge and passion for wine with visitors. Today, Laura, her father, and her brother are owners and operators of Toasted Toad Cellars, where she serves as the winemaker.
