Sheldon Wines (Winemaker & Owner)

Sheldon Wines is a partnership between Tobe and Dylan Sheldon. In 2000, after working harvest in Western Australia, Dylan returned to the U.S. to launch Cepage Wine Bar in Carmel, California. Tobe, who had been studying geology for nearly a decade in Boise, Idaho, also returned to California. A self-proclaimed wino, Tobe was planning a trip around the world and hoping to get work in wineries overseas. Frequenting Cepage Wine Bar, she met Dylan Sheldon and over a few glasses of wine divulged her plans for adventure. A kiss was exchanged and five weeks later they were engaged. They sold what little they owned, and traveled the world, making wine together.

Returning to the US with $60 in cash and $10,000 in credit card debt, they set out to start their own winery. Sleeping on the floor of an old empty winery in Monterey, CA, they scoured the wine regions of the Northwest for vineyards of integrity. With purple feet, a borrowed basket press, and a passion for the ancient art of winemaking, they created the first vintage of Sheldon Wines in 2003, making four different varietals, for a total of 420 cases. Remaining true to their vision, they have refused investors over the years, remaining a two-person operation from start to finish. They often work 16-hour days in the winery and restaurants.

Sheldon Wines is a micro-winery that crafts single vineyard designate wines of excellence. The wines are sustainably farmed, hand harvested, and basket pressed. The winery produces limited productions of Chardonnay, Viognier, Pinot Noir, Grenache, Graciano, Petite Sirah, and Cabernet Sauvignon. A few special vineyards yield only enough for a single barrel – just 25 cases.
