Cedarville Vineyard & Winery (Winemaker and Co-Owner)

Both Susan Marks and her husband, Jonathan Lacks, graduated from the University of California, Davis, with degrees in enology, and they met on campus at a wine tasting. Both before and after graduation they worked as winemakers in Napa Valley and the Central Coast and decided that they wanted to start their own winery someday. Before that could happen, they spent 15 years outside the wine industry working in Silicon Valley while planning their eventual vineyard purchase.

They had been frequent visitors to the Sierra Foothills since their college days, and based on the success of other Foothill wineries and the attractiveness of the Fair Play area, they decided to try to find a property there to develop into a vineyard. In 1995, they found what they were looking for, a perfectly situated 20-acre property at 2,500-ft. elevation, located a half mile up a dirt road from Fair Play Road. Eventually the location would become Cedarville Vineyard.

The first Cedarville Vineyard wines came from the 1998 vintage. In May 1999, passion finally overcame good sense, and they moved to the vineyard to build their estate winery and focus on wines full time. Cedarville Vineyard and Winery's hand-crafted varietals include Grenache, Zinfandel, and Cabernet Sauvignon.
