From my experience in a family-owned restaurant, I've come to find that waitresses and waiters all over are being worked at low-wages. Specifically, the waitresses in family-owned restaurants struggle even more; they have to deal with other rules and restrictions than other waitresses and waiters. These low-wage workers, although they do obtain some tips, still struggle immensely to survive, living off of a base pay of $2.33 an hour. They slave away trying to get customers everything they need and ask for - extra toast or a swap in an order. On top of customers who are needy, waitresses struggle to meet manager's expectations and goals. They are being overworked, and this causes them to be exhausted. Besides the struggles at work, waitresses and waiters are trying to survive on the home front and make the most out of their situations.
