Marcus started the rebellion against the DHS after the bombing of the Bay Bridge, and created the Xnet. After the DHS declared the Xnetters a terrorist group, they named Marcus’s handle M1K3Y as the head of the terrorist group. They eventually found out that it was Marcus and he was tortured to find out why and how he bombed the bridge. When evaluating whether Marcus could be considered a terrorist or not, it is necessary to look at everything that he created and caused. Friedland and Waldron would consider the fear that Marcus installed in the public after he started the arphid cloning and messed with the transportation systems in San Francisco, to be an act of a terrorist. They might also consider his conspiracy against the United States government as a form of terror. Doctorow on the other hand sees Marcus as a visionary not unlike the founding fathers, and he was only following the Declaration of Independence in his attempt to combat the corruption of the DHS. Doctorow shows us that Marcus is not a terrorist and that he was trying to defend the principles that America was founded on. |
