Patriot Act is Far From Patriotic

patriot act

The government in Little Brother is not stopped by anything. They have nothing and no one stopping them from their rampage of power and unconstitutional acts. This is both frustrating and unconstitutional, however in the novel they completely get away with it. The Us Patriot Act was signed in by President George Bush directly following the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001. The government wanted to do something quickly to make the country safer and not have a risk of another terrorist attack. This Act was passed so quickly, however, congress did not have enough time to look it over and make sure it was ok. The patriot act was far from ok; however in the haste of passing it the problems were overlooked. The Patriot act grants the government with way too much power. It messes with the checks and balances, and makes unconstitutional acts ok. The patriot act is a revision of the laws on surveillance that the government must follow. The government was so focused on making this country a safer place, they started ignoring the laws that made this country such a great, free nation. The government is trying to make this country safer by taking away many great aspects that make up the reasons people live here. The more freedoms the government takes away the angrier people are getting, and there is also no proof saying the more freedoms being taken away and the more surveillance being used will prevent another terrorist attack from happening. It might help, but people are questioning if the risk is large enough to take for what they are giving up. People have even said many of the revisions that were made about the laws on surveillance had little to do with terrorism. It mostly gave the government more power to use, and they are following less rules as a result.
