TEXTS:

Yalom Theory and Practice of Group Psychotherapy (laters addition)
Shapiro, Peltz & Bernadett-Shapiro Brief Group Tratment (Review book)

This course is designed for a small number of students who wish to learn and practice leadership skills in group therapy and counseling settings.  It is hoped that each student taking the course will have the opportunity to have some "hands on" group experience.  It will be possible for students who complete this course to co-lead pre-groups in future terms.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

1) Participate in a videotaped marathon group session (1/22/98).

          2) Participate in class discussions of this group with regard to leadership issues,                 co-leadership, and in role playing and videotaping in class.

3) Write a 15 - 20 Page Paper (Double spaced).

Using the experience of your pre-group, the Marathon in this class and any additional groups in which you have been a member, observer or leader, write an in depth personal account of what you learned about yourself and about group process.  The paper, should include such material as your expectations, goals, feelings, thoughts, etc.  It should also include changes in these as the group unfolded.  Include a description of the group process and how it personally affected you (i.e. what was salient for your growth?  What was deleterious?).  Finally, describe the theoretical perspective of the group leader and examine how it coincides with your own.  What about it worked well or poorly for you? What limitations did the leaders have from a personal and theoretical viewpoint?  How would you lead a group differently?  What counter-transference issues would you have to encounter if you were the group leader?  As much as possible, integrate the readings from CPSY 219 & 389 into your formulations.

YOUR PAPER IS DUE NO LATER THAN 3/13/01

COURSE GRADE:

50% of the grade will be based on the grade for the paper;
50% of the grade will be based on class participation and the application of course constructs to our real group.

READING:

Try to read as much as possible before the marathon.  Please read the first chapter in Yalom, A Therapeutic Factors @ the first week.  View Video and complete workbook as follow:

1/11 - Part 1 & 2; 1/18 Part 3 & 4; 1/25 Part 5

Then pick and choose in Yalom
