Jeff Zorn's Last Lecture: Professor Zorn is retiring after this academic year and is asking for your attendance at his “Last Lecture” Tuesday, January 27, at 7:30 PM in Sobrato Commons B & C. Its title is "Amusing, Enlightening Tales: My Life and Times as a Student and Teacher." He is planning to "tell juicy stories and otherwise reflect on school achievement and educational philosophy for about 45-50 minutes, then some Q and A, and even a cookie or two!" Don't miss out!
Congratulations: Professor Theresa Conefrey and Professor Allia Ida Griffin on receiving Hackworth grants from the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics.

Nicholas Leither
Nicholas Leither's short story, "Indications," was accepted for publication at "The Doctor T.J. Eckleburg Review." Last year he started a blog called "Tense Present" devoted to CTW 2 students' research. There, students publish collaborative essays and capstone projects, where they work in teams to explore topics related to food and sustainability. Michael Malone's wonderful company biography and industry narrative, The Intel Trinity: How Robert Noyce, Gordon Moore, and Andy Grove Built the World's Most Important Company, took home the 2014 800-CEO-READ Business Book of the Year Award and Jack Covert Award was announced at an industry party in New York City Here's the article »

Robin Tremblay-McGaw
As part of Small Press Traffic's 40th Anniversary Celebration, Robin's remembrance of encountering Susan Howe's My Emily Dickinson (1985), was published on December 15th here: http://smallpresstraffic.org/2562.
On Sunday March 22nd, Robin will read her paper "Her Ars Poetica: Kathleen Fraser's Letter to the World" as part of the Tribute to poet Kathleen Fraser, co-sponsored by The Poetry Center at SFSU and Small Press Traffic. The paper will be published online as well.
Lastly, in spring, Robin's first full-length poetry collection, Dear Reader, will be published by Ithuriel's Spear. |

Cruz Medina
Cruz Medina's book Reclaiming Poch@ Pop: Examining the Rhetoric of Cultural Deficiency came out this month (Jan 2015) with Palgrave MacMillan. The blurb is:
"This book traces the historical trajectory of the pocho (Latinos who are influenced by Anglo culture) in pop culture, beginning with iconic Latin@ films of the 1990s and '80s to demonstrate how representations of English-speaking Latin@s break from cliché misrepresentations. Medina looks at themes including resistance to cultural deficiency through subversive rhetorical productions that engage with issues of immigration, identity, and education. He shows how the trope of pocho/pocha/poch@, which traditionally signified the negative connotation of "cultural traitor" in Spanish, has been reclaimed through the pop cultural productions of Latinos who self-identify as poch@."
The Forword is from Arturo Aldama with artwork from Lalo Alcaraz and Guillermo Gomez-Pena, and an interview with members of the band Ozomatli.

My book review on Charles Molesworth's "And Bid Him Sing: A Biography of Countee Cullen" is now published in the winter 2015 issue of The Black Scholar. |

Tricia Serviss
Tricia Serviss presented her work at the 2014 Cultural Rhetoric Conference this past fall with a talk entitled "Cultural Rhetoric as Methodology."
Tricia Serviss presented her work at the 2015 MLA Conference as part of the CCCC sponsored panel called "Understanding Plagiarism, Student Writing, and Research Methods through the Citation Project." Tricia's own paper was entitled "Engaging with Transcontextual Research Methods: Lessons from The Citation Project."

Juan Velasco published "The Language of Nation Beyond Borders: The Bilingual Trilogy of Francisco Jiménez" in the volume Ethnic Literatures and Transnationalism, edited by Aparajita Nanda and published by Routledge; he also published "Using Queer Chicana/o Autobiography to Teach Courses on Identity and Solidarity” in the volume Expanding the Circle: Creating an Inclusive Environment in Higher Education for LGBTQ Students and Studies, edited by John Hawley and published SUNY.

English Alumni and Student Recognition
Julie Jigour ('08) has completed her first year of Carnegie Mellon University's MFA program in dramatic writing. She was selected for the Theater Masters 2014 MFA Playwrights Festival, through which she received productions of a ten-minute play in Aspen and New York City. Her short screenplay Paper Umbrellas is currently a finalist for the 2014 Steeltown Film Factory competition, and her TV pilot Antarctica is a finalist for the CMU division of the Sloan Foundation screenplay competition.
