Our Mission: Sterile Syringe Exchange Program

To provide easy access to syringe exchange programs in order to provide free sterile syringes and collect used syringes from injection-drug users to reduce transmission of bloodborne pathogens, including human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B virus, and hepatitis C virus.

How it works

Clients are able to enter the exchange site, where they hand in used injection equipment and receive new needles or syringes. The main benefit, besides consistency for those in need of clean needles, is that these programs are better able to provide additional services to clients, such as HIV testing, healthcare, drug counseling.

Statistical Support from the CDC

  • A study of over 1,600 injection drug users in New York found that those who used an syringe exchange in the early 1990s were more than three times less likely to contract H.I.V.
  • A cost-effective analysis published in 2014 replicated the findings of others that came before it: A dollar invested in syringe exchange programs saves at least size dollars in avoided costs associated with H.I.V. alone.
  • Syringe exchange programs "reduce not only infectious disease but also create an opportunity for people to get the care and provide a transition into tratment for people in the community." -Micheal Botticelli (Director of the Federal Office of National Drug Control Policy)
