The work force for the last 60 years have used the slogan “9 to 5” expressing 8 hours of work for 5 days. This traditional 40 hour work week started with the New Deal and has been the golden standard for benefits and a steady job. But are that many hours of work really necessary? With a boom in technological breakthroughs, or lives should be getting easier. Instead we are trained in new technologies and expected to produce a greater individual output. This train of thought is heading in the wrong direction. As more technology is developed or work week should be getting shorter. At the end of the 1800’s, the average work week was cut in half from 84 hours a week to 42 because of the time saving devices. We seem to be stuck at this magical number 40, but there is a way out.
