Proposal:
I plan to create a web of ideas related to campus racism in the United States with a specific tie-in to Santa Clara University. The fight against racism cannot be left unfinished. It is amazing that students are encouraged to expand their horizons by attaining higher education, but are often exposed to the anti-expansion: racism. Racism stems from social constructs. Racism stems from ignorance. Racism stems from socio-economic difference. Racism has been created and is being perpetuated by people, and people must put it to an end.
I will refer to academic literature and personal experience to explain the prevalence and problem of racism on American college campuses. I will touch on ways to constructively respond to campus racism, ways universities and students are doing so now (with an emphasis on Santa Clara University), and the importance of not losing focus. Much of my project may focus on reverse-racism, and how it is often a side-effect of misdirected anger by minorities and all advocates of diversity and multiculturalism.
Finally, I will create a short, 2-3 minute PSA/creative video that exposes the truths of racism in the Silicon Valley, an area often commended for great diversity. This video will be put together with interviews of current and former college students of various socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds. This will include individuals who have lived in the Silicon Valley for many years as well as those who have come from other areas of California/the US.
Timeline:
1. Review of the Literature, complete by May 27
3. Start writing from personal experience to get ideas going, May 27
2. Begin
interviewing for PSA, May 29
3. Work on project content, May 30 - June 4
