While living in Salvador, Brazil in 2008, I went to my first ever capoeira class, and fell in love with the playful but dangerous martial art. African slaves developed capoeira as a clandestine training practice to prepare for rebellion, and disguised it as a dance so their masters would never notice.
Today, capoeira, a uniquely Brazilian art form is played worldwide. In capoeira, players form a roda, a circle of singing and clapping, inside which the game takes place. I came to learn that the roda is more than just the shape of the game, the roda is an important symbol of the community created by capoeira.
