 With the emergence of digital forms of media and the internet came the ability to freely and instantaneously distribute intellectual property across great distances. The companies producing these materials quickly recognized this sharing of media as a threat to revenue. Thus were the thieves and scoundrels of the internet age labeled as digital pirates.
But today's pirates are not the criminals that the cutlass-swinging, swashbuckling privateers of the 18th century were. Today's pirates are the agents of a new age, in which access to media is free and individuals are imbued with the power to create their own realities.
